Tooth decay is the most common preventable childhood disease.
Untreated decay can lead to tooth infection and even the loss of a tooth.
Dental fillings from Dr. Brock are often the best way to protect & restore your child’s teeth if they have been damaged by decay.
We focus on kid-friendly dentistry and we always keep your child feeling safe and comfortable throughout the entire procedure.
Amalgam fillings are made of a blend of metals like silver, tin, copper and mercury. They have been used to restore damaged teeth for decades, and they are very durable and long-lasting. However, they do have a silver-gray color that detracts from the appearance of the tooth, so we typically only recommend amalgam fillings for baby teeth. Since the baby tooth will eventually fall out and be replaced, the cosmetic appearance of the filling is not as important.
Composite fillings are made out of dental resin. Unlike amalgam fillings, they are built to match the color of your child’s tooth perfectly. Once the filling has been applied, the tooth will look completely natural and its appearance won’t be affected. Composite fillings also usually require the removal of less enamel during the filling preparation process, and provide a very strong hold. If you’re not sure which type of filling is right for your child, schedule an appointment with Dr. Brock in Clear Lake to go over your treatment options.
If your child is complaining of a toothache, this is often the first sign that they have a serious cavity, which may require treatment with a dental filling. You may notice white spots or brown discoloration on the teeth, or you may even notice small pits or holes.
Your child’s teeth may also be more sensitive to hot and cold foods and drinks, the pressure of chewing, and the consumption of sweet foods. If you notice one or more of these symptoms, schedule an appointment at Big Picture Pediatric Dentistry in Houston right away.
First, your child will be put to ease explaining the process in age-appropriate language. Depending on the cavity, your child's mouth may or may not need numbed. If we need to numb your child's mouth or they are apprehensive, our Clear Lake pediatric dental office has a variety of sedation options, including laughing gas, oral sedation, or IV sedation.
Once your child’s mouth is numb, Dr. Brock will begin preparing the tooth by removing decayed enamel. Once the tooth has been prepared, he will select the appropriate filling material. Using special dental tools, Dr. Brock will shape and refine the filling. It will be sculpted and trimmed to look and feel just like a natural part of your child’s mouth.
Once the filling has been completed, Dr. Brock will check your child’s bite and ensure the filling fits perfectly, and make any necessary last minute adjustments. Then, the filling process is complete.
For the most part, there are no special steps that need to be taken to care for your child’s tooth after a filling. Their mouth may be numb for a few hours after treatment, so they should avoid eating or chewing, as this could result in accidentally biting the tongue or cheek.
After the numbing wears off, a little bit of discomfort is normal for the next day or two. Your child’s tooth may also feel a bit sensitive. This may last for a few days, or up to a few weeks. They can continue brushing and flossing normally, but be gentle around the filled tooth. Prolonged pain and discomfort after a filling are not normal. If your child is complaining of serious pain up to a week after their treatment, come into our Clear Lake office for a follow-up as soon as possible.
